The cottage is in a
peaceful village called Hermon, located between fabulous beaches in either
direction.
Maltraeth
cob, is just a walk or cycle ride away, over the brow of the hill, good for
fishing and bird watching, and continues right down to Newborough beach,
with its miles of forest, nature reserve and bird hides.
Llandwyn Island separates the two massive beaches at Newborough, this was
the home of St. Dwynwen, patron saint of lovers. You can visit the museum,
learn about the legend and see the volcanic rocks from a bygone age. The
lighthouse here was the recent location of a new film starring Demi Moore.
Kite surfers love the space of these beaches and seals have been seen
basking on the rocks.
Wild ponies roam freely around this area, and red squirrels have been
introduced into the forest and have several litters of young this year.
Rabbits live among the sand dunes. Many different kinds of birds, including
birds of prey can be seen all around this area.
Cable Bay, in the opposite direction from the cottage, is a pretty bay which
is a favourite with surfers. A short cliff walk takes you to a neolithic
burial chamber. The stones inside have ancient rock art engraved on them.
Historic Aberffraw, ancient capital of Gwynedd has an estuary leading from
the ancient bridge over the River Ffraw to another huge magnificent beach
with sand dunes.
Rhosneigr, a bit further on, is well known for its water sports.
You can hire kayaks, surfboards and wetsuits etc. at the surf shop, which
offers a range of water sporting facilities. Beach Horse riding is offered
at a local riding school.
Anglesey Circuit, fully licensed Motor Sports Association and Auto Cycle
Union Championship race track is just down the road. Events usually happen
on Sundays.
If you like walking there are some of the most breathtaking scenic, heritage
and coastal footpaths in this area, taking in beautiful Beaumaris, site of
the last of Edward 1st's iron ring of castles, and dramatic views of the
Menai Straits, Newborough forest and Aberffraw.
Castles abound, with Beaumaris, Caernarfon ,Conwy, and Penrhyn all being
within half an hour's drive, and also Plas Newydd which has stately home and
gardens you will pass on your way from the bridge to the cottage.
For family days out there are Anglesey Model Village and Gardens, Henblas
Country Park with under cover adventure playground and farm and animal
activities.
Foel Farm Park and Anglesey Sea Zoo are all only minutes away.
Visit the local market at Llangefni on Saturday or the massive car boot sale
on Sunday at Mona.
Sample local fresh produce from the farm shop you will pass on the way to
the Menai Bridge. Welsh beef and lamb, home grown vegetables, home baked
crumbles and cakes.
