Beaumaris’s core is genuinely friendly to wheels and limited mobility: the town centre is flat and compact, with the Green, the promenade and the pier all step-free, and Castle Street’s shops and cafes a short level roll from the main car parks (blue badge provision at both). Benches line the front at regular intervals, facing the best view in Wales.
The Attractions
The castle: the moat path and much of the inner ward are manageable on firm, mostly level surfaces — the wall passages and towers involve stairs; Cadw’s website details current access provision and concessions for visitors with disabilities plus a companion. St Mary’s has level access. Boat trips: boarding involves the pier gangway and a step onto the boat — the operators are experienced and helpful; call ahead to discuss your needs and tide timings, which affect the gangway slope.
Staying & Eating
The Bulkeley Hotel stands out for access: a lift serves all bedrooms and it advertises facilities for disabled guests — rare in a town of listed buildings, where the historic inns inevitably involve stairs and thresholds (always ask; ground-floor rooms exist). Pubs and restaurants are mostly ground-floor but historic: expect the odd step and narrow doorway, with staff well used to helping. Accessible WCs: at the main car park facilities.
Planning Resources
Before travelling: Cadw publishes detailed access statements for the castle including parking, surfaces and companion-ticket policy; the boat operators will talk through boarding honestly on the phone — tide state changes the gangway slope substantially, so they can advise the easiest sailing times of your chosen day. Blue badge holders should target the Green car park for the shortest level route to pier, promenade and Castle Street alike. And the town’s scale is itself the great accessibility feature: nothing worth doing is more than 400 level metres from anything else.
